Buying Guide: Wooden Shelves

Buying Guide: Wooden Shelves

Looking for shelves to mount onto your wall? You've come to the right place! Here's a buying guide to help you choose the perfect wooden shelves for your home.

Things to Consider

Firstly, let's talk about the uses of our solid wood shelves in different rooms of the house. These versatile shelves can be used in many different ways, and here are a few ideas to get you started:

  1. Living room: Use our best-selling floating shelves to display your photo albums, books, home  accessories, and plants. They can also be used to hold your favourite living room gadgets, such as speakers or even your Alexa!
  2. Bedroom: Our shelves are perfect for holding your favourite books, candles, and other decorative items. If you’re looking for an open storage option, your shelves can also be used as a home for baskets where you could store small clothing items, such as socks and underwear.
  3. Kitchen: Use our wooden shelves to hold your favourite cookbooks, spices, and cooking utensils. They can also be used to display plants, pottery or your special crockery.
  4. Home Office: Floating shelves can hold plants, stationary and other office essentials, whilst displaying them to suit your style.

You will also want to consider the different features you need when purchasing your wooden shelves:

  1. Length: Our shelves come in a range of lengths, so make sure to measure the space where you want to install them to ensure you get the right size. Longer shelves can hold more items, but shorter shelves can be easier to install.
  2. Wall type: Consider the type of material your wall is made of. All our shelves are handcrafted from solid wood, making the floating shelves only suitable for solid walls -  on a plasterboard wall, a floating shelf may slope. If you’re looking for a shelf for your plasterboard or stud wall, a popular option is our bracketed shelves - all the same style, just with some supportive industrial-style hardware.
  3. Weight capacity: Make sure to check the weight capacity of the shelves before purchasing them. This is especially important if you plan to use them to hold heavy items like books or electronics. Our shelves are all pretty strong, however our shelves with brackets are our sturdiest and stronger option, if you’re looking for something that can hold over 35kg, opt to add the metal brackets!
  4. Finish: Wooden shelves come in a variety of finishes, such as Natural, English or Smoke Oak wax finishes. Choose a finish that complements your decor style and other furniture in the room.

Finally, here are some factors that make your wooden shelf a great investment:

  1. Material: The type of wood used to construct the shelf is an important factor. We work with both oak and pine, which are popular for their durability and attractive grain patterns. Oak is a hardwood, giving it a longer lifespan and a more premium price point. Our Pine shelves are equally as beautiful and classed as a softwood - ideal for walls that require a more lightweight shelf with a more wavy grain texture.
  2. Finish: The finish on a wooden shelf plays a big role in its durability and appearance. Look for shelves with a protective coating such as wax or oil to help resist scratches and other damage.
  3. Strength: The strength of a wooden shelf is determined by its thickness and the way it's constructed. Thicker shelves will be stronger and more durable, while shelves made with quality joinery techniques such as dovetail or mortise and tenon joints will be more stable and secure.
  4. Installation: A quality wooden shelf should be easy to install and come with all necessary hardware. Look for shelves with sturdy mounting brackets that can be securely attached to the wall.

A quality wooden shelf is made from durable materials, has a protective finish, is constructed with strong joinery techniques, and comes with easy-to-use hardware. By paying attention to these factors, you'll be sure to find a wooden shelf that will serve you well for years to come.
