A solid wood shelf or mantel can make such a difference to a room. Whether it’s a place for your favourite books, a little extra storage in the kitchen or a focal point in your living space, getting it fitted correctly is the first step to enjoying it in your home.
To help you get started, we’ve brought together our fitting videos for floating shelves and oak and pine mantels. You’ll also find links to our written guides if you’d like more detailed fitting instructions to refer to along the way.
Before You Begin
Before reaching for the drill, take a little time to read the fitting instructions supplied with your order and watch the relevant video all the way through. Having a clear idea of the process will help you prepare your space and gather the tools you need.
Unpack your shelf or mantel carefully, check the fixings and keep everything together so it’s easy to find when you need it. Protect the wood by resting it on a clean, soft surface while you prepare.
Check Your Wall
Make sure your wall is suitable for your chosen shelf or mantel before starting. The wall construction and the fixings used are an important part of a secure installation, so follow the guidance for your specific product.
If you’re unsure about your wall type or how to fit your piece securely, ask a professional fitter for advice before drilling.
Plan the Position
Think about how you’ll use your shelf or mantel and how it will sit alongside the other features in the room.
For shelves, consider what you’d like to display and leave enough space above for taller items. If you’re fitting more than one shelf, plan their spacing together before marking the wall.
For a mantel, consider where it will have the most impact. It could sit above a fireplace, or create a focal point on a plain wall. Leave enough space for anything you’d like to display, as well as artwork or a mirror above.
Take your time with measurements, check that your markings are level and check for hidden cables and pipework before drilling.
How to Fit Oak and Pine Mantels
An oak or pine mantel brings natural warmth and character to your home. Above a fireplace or as a feature in its own right, its substantial shape and wood grain can give the room a focal point.
Style yours with a favourite photograph, a few ceramics or seasonal touches. You don’t need a fireplace to enjoy a mantel - it can be a lovely way to add interest and display space wherever your room needs a little something.
Before fitting, make sure you’re happy with its height and position. Consider how it looks alongside nearby furniture and leave enough room around it so it doesn’t feel crowded.
Our video fitting guide is below. Watch it before you begin, then pause and revisit it as needed during installation. Follow the instructions for your particular mantel and arrange help with lifting and positioning it where needed.

How to Fit Floating Shelves
Floating shelves are a lovely way to add useful storage and display space while keeping the focus on the wood. From everyday kitchen essentials to photographs and favourite books, they give the things you love a place of their own.
Before fitting your shelf, think about both its position and what you plan to put on it. In a kitchen, you’ll want everyday items within comfortable reach. Above a desk or seating area, allow enough room for people to use the space comfortably.
If you’re creating a group of shelves, mark out the full arrangement first. This gives you a chance to check the spacing and make any adjustments before drilling.
Use the video below alongside the fitting instructions for your shelf, taking your time to check measurements and alignment as you go.

Once Your Shelf or Mantel Is Fitted
Before adding anything to your shelf or mantel, check that the installation is complete, the piece is level and it is securely fitted in line with the instructions.
Then comes the enjoyable part: making it your own. A few favourite books, a framed photograph or a small collection of ceramics can be all you need. Leaving some space between items lets the natural grain and character of the wood show through.
You can also change your display throughout the year, swapping photographs or introducing seasonal pieces to give the space a fresh feel.
